Seed dispersal by frugivores from forest remnants promotes the regeneration of adjacent invaded forests in an oceanic island

چکیده
Forest remnants often act as refuges for native plant species within a degraded and highly fragmented forest matrix. Understanding whether these patches can function feeding grounds frugivores seed sources dispersal into the surrounding provide critical information on ecosystem functions landscape scale guidance restoration. We used large-scale natural system of eight granitic inselbergs in Seychelles recorded identity transport direction seeds retrieved from droppings mist-netted birds across an invasion gradient. found that inselberg are important areas frugivores, acting source propagules to invaded forests potentially limiting progression non-native invasion. Two dominant (Cinnamomum verum Clidemia hirta) were integrated frugivores' diets, competing with plants services. Despite high propagule pressure, spill-over effect seemed have more durable positive recruitment fading out distance edge. Our findings illustrate remnant generate through directed by frugivores. This cross-boundary may slow down contribute recovery adjacent ecosystems. avian therefore play key role maintenance biodiversity insurance future restoration efforts.

Seed Dispersal of a High Quality Fruit by Specialized Frugivores: High Quality Dispersal?1
Dispersal quality, as estimated by the cumulative effects of dispersal, germination, seed predation, and seedling survival, was examined for Beilschmiedia pendula (Lauraceae) in Monteverde, Costa Rica. I determined the pattern of dispersal by finding seeds deposited by birds, protected the seeds from seed predators with cages to assess germination and seedling survival, and examined seed predat...
متن کاملDifferential contribution of frugivores to complex seed dispersal patterns.
Frugivores are highly variable in their contribution to fruit removal in plant populations. However, data are lacking on species-specific variation in two central aspects of seed dispersal, distance of dispersal and probability of dispersal among populations through long-distance transport. We used DNA-based genotyping techniques on Prunus mahaleb seeds dispersed by birds (small- and medium-siz...
متن کاملLow redundancy in seed dispersal within an island frugivore community
The low species diversity that often characterizes island ecosystems could result in low functional redundancy within communities. Flying foxes (large fruit bats) are important seed dispersers of large-seeded species, but their redundancy within island communities has never been explicitly tested. In a Pacific archipelago, we found that flying foxes were the sole effective disperser of 57 % of ...
متن کاملDispersal and Destruction of Seed in Central North Island Podocarp Forests
New Zealand has a similar history of logging, followed by the plough or fire, or similar disturbances. In addition, since all the ungulates have been introduced in a short time, biologically speaking, the native plants are generally ill-adapted to maintain themselves under heavy browsing pressure. An inevitable imbalance between animal numbers and the amount of available food has resulted. The ...
متن کاملNatural Experiment Demonstrates That Bird Loss Leads to Cessation of Dispersal of Native Seeds from Intact to Degraded Forests
In healthy forests, vertebrate frugivores move seeds from intact to degraded forests, aiding in the passive regeneration of degraded forests. Yet vertebrate frugivores are declining around the world, and little is known about the impact of this loss on regeneration of degraded areas. Here, we use a unique natural experiment to assess how complete vertebrate frugivore loss affects native seed ra...
